2nd Sunday of Lent 2024

Abraham’s journey is one of profound sacrifice and unwavering trust. He faced the ultimate test of faith when God called upon him to offer his own son as a sacrifice. Despite the unimaginable pain and heartache this command must have caused him, Abraham remained steadfast in his devotion to God. His willingness to obey, even in the face of such a harrowing task, demonstrates the depth of his faith and his unshakeable trust in God’s plan.

As we reflect on Abraham’s example, we are reminded of the challenges we encounter in our own lives. Like Abraham, we may face moments of uncertainty, doubt, and fear. We may be confronted with situations that test the very core of our beliefs and values. In these moments, we are called to emulate Abraham’s faithfulness and resilience, trusting that God’s love and guidance will see us through even the darkest of times.

1st Sunday of Lent 2024

In today’s Gospel, we are reminded of how Jesus was driven into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit for forty days and forty nights and was tempted by Satan. The narrative of the wilderness in the Gospel has a profound significance for each of us. It represents a place of solitude, silence, and spiritual testing. It’s a space where distractions are minimised, and one is forced to confront inner struggles, doubts, and temptations. In our modern world filled with constant noise, distractions, and busyness, the metaphorical wilderness reminds us of the importance of carving out intentional time for introspection, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

Just as Jesus withdrew to the wilderness to commune with God and prepare for his ministry, we too are called into moments of solitude and silence to reconnect with our inner selves and deepen our relationship with the Lord.

New Year’s Eve 2023

As we step into the New Year, let us embrace the promise of hope and boundless opportunities. May our hearts be filled with unwavering faith in the Risen Jesus, drawing strength from His eternal love and guidance.

In the spirit of renewal, let us find inspiration in the remarkable journey of Mary and Joseph. Their resilience and steadfastness in facing challenges teach us valuable lessons about trust and perseverance. May their example encourage us to face uncertainties with grace and courage as we embark on our journeys.

Let hope be our guiding light this New Year, and let faith in the Risen Jesus illuminate our path. May the stories of Mary and Joseph inspire us to approach challenges with unwavering determination, knowing that every obstacle is an opportunity to rediscover the Lord.

4th Sunday of Advent & Christmas 2023

This year, we swiftly move from the reflective moments of the Fourth Sunday of Advent to the joyous celebration of Christmas. The preparation of Advent leads us to rejoice in the birth of a child, a symbol of hope and resilience in the humble stable where Mary and Joseph trusted in God’s plan.

Resilience is a much-needed virtue in our world, grappling with daily challenges such as climate change and conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Yemen. Additionally, we witness the plight of migrants risking their lives for a better future alongside concerns of social deprivation and the widening gap between the haves and have-nots.

This Advent, we focused on rediscovering our individual spaces, where we are accountable and responsible. Let this Christmas joy radiate into our personal spheres, connecting us with God through the miraculous birth of His Son and the inner resilience of Mary & Joseph.

I wish you a blessed Christmas.

3rd Sunday of Advent 2023

Gaudete Sunday is a day of rejoicing amidst our Advent journey. We find cause for joy even during the penitential season of waiting, as symbolised by the pink candle on the Advent wreath. As we draw closer to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, our hearts are filled with anticipation.

Today’s readings are filled with themes of joy, hope, and preparing the way for the Lord. As the Prophet Zephaniah encourages us, “Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem!” (Zephaniah 3:14). Let us celebrate Gaudete Sunday in the depths of our hearts and minds. Our joy is rooted in the hope that Christ brings into our lives, as St Paul reminds us in the second reading.

Yet we are reminded by John the Baptist, who embodies the spirit of Advent in the Gospel that we are to prepare a way for the Lord by repentance. As we embrace the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday night, let us examine our lives in the presence of the Lord, with the Joy of Gaudate Sunday, knowing that the Lord is with us.

2nd Sunday of Advent 2023

The voice of John the Baptist conveys a timeless and vital message that the world urgently needs to hear. As a society engulfed in distractions, materialism, and self-centered pursuits, John’s call for repentance aims to refocus the mind on what matters: a deep examination of conscience. John’s humility starkly contrasts the prevailing culture of self-promotion and individualism with humility in the wilderness, acknowledging something greater than ourselves.

As we step into the second week of Advent, let us approach it with a humility of deep reflection.

1st Sunday of Advent 2023

During this Advent season, I invite you to embark on a faith journey, delving into Sacred Scripture and accompanying Wendy Ingham as she readies herself for reception into the Church at Easter. This expedition of faith will also continue throughout Lent, offering an open invitation for all to join us on a ten-week journey and renewal of faith.

Advent beckons as a sacred season of anticipation and reflection. In its quiet moments, we find ourselves on the threshold of hope, preparing to celebrate the profound significance of Christ’s arrival on that first Christmas and pointing us to prepare for his final arrival at the end of time. Advent is not a secular countdown to Christmas but a pilgrimage of the soul in preparation to meet Our Lord & Saviour.

Corpus Christi 2023

On this solemn feast of Corpus Christi, we celebrate the profound mystery of the Eucharist, the Most Holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are reminded of the incredible depth of God’s love for us. Jesus, out of his boundless compassion, instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. In the Eucharist, we encounter the living Christ, present to us uniquely and intimately. As we receive the consecrated host, we are united with him in a profound communion—a union of our souls with the very source of life and love. Through this mystical encounter, we are nourished, strengthened, and transformed. For us as Catholics, the Eucharist is not a mere symbol or representation; it is the real and substantial presence of Jesus Christ, given to us as spiritual food for our faith journey.

Trinity Sunday 2023

Today we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity – the profound nature of God’s existence – the three distinct persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the One God Head. This Divine communion of love is the source and model of all love. Each of us is invited to participate in the divine life of the Holy Trinity. As members of the Church, we share in the mission of proclaiming the love of the Father, following the example of the Son and being guided by the Holy Spirit.

In the Holy Trinity, we see the wonder of unity and harmony in the interplay of creation; from the delicate ecosystems that sustain life to the intricate cycles of the seasons, there is an inherent harmony at work – with a symbolic presence of the Most Holy Trinity, God the Father giving us creation and life. His only Son, showing us how to live and the force of the Holy Spirit being our guide and source of strength.
