7th Sunday of Easter – 17 May 2026

Politically, there is a great deal of uncertainty at the moment as we see the challenges the government faces, its leadership, and the significant shift away from the two-party dominance that has defined much of our lives.

Uncertainty is a significant part of life. No matter how much we plan, predict, or prepare, there are always elements beyond our control. Political change, economic pressures, personal circumstances, and global events constantly remind us that life is rarely fixed or predictable.

For us as Christians, however, we do not face uncertainty alone. We have the gift of the Holy Spirit, who comes alongside us to guide, strengthen, and sustain us through times of confusion and change. The Holy Spirit brings wisdom when decisions are difficult, peace when anxiety threatens to overwhelm us, and courage when the future feels unclear. Rather than removing every challenge or answering every question immediately, the Spirit reminds us of God’s constant presence and faithfulness.

Jesus’ ascension into heaven reminds us that where the head has gone the body one day will join. The Ascension is therefore not simply about Jesus leaving earth, but about opening the way for humanity to follow him into the fullness of God’s presence. Yet we are still pilgrims. In the words of the late Cardinal Hume, “we are pilgrims, not settlers; this earth is our inn, not our home.”
